Artist`s Statement
In the style of a wartime poster complete with Union Jacks, this features the “magnificant seven” of Captain Mainwaring,
Sergeant Wilson, Corporal Jones, Fraser, Pike Godfrey and
Walker. In addition, there are cameo portraits of Warden Hodges, the Vicar and Verger. The design is linked together by wartime posters, a soldier`s helmet, a gas mask case and a Lee Enfield 303 bolt action rifle. A radio from the period, together with a
hand grenade with the “deadly attachment” of string completes the foreground. A central panel shows Jones`van travelling through Walmington-on-Sea, whilst the upper area of
searchlights reveals a barrage balloon and a trio of spitfires.
