As well as working in paint, Keith often uses pastel, particularly for portraits. It suits his preference for working on quite a large scale, and it can be bold and spontaneous in nature. It requires the added discipline of working from light to dark, unlike painting where overworking and repainting is always possible.

Portraits are often further enlivened by the technique of “striking out” with an eraser, which works very well for representing hair. Also, pastel seems to be very suitable for portraying children.

The artist often uses a combination of soft pastel to create larger areas of colour, whilst detail is added in with harder conte crayons, in either stick or pencil form.
